Bailey Baker and Jack B. Murphy began their collaboration in the Fall of 2017 during their sophomore year in Shenandoah Conser-vatory’s Musical Theatre program. They initially wrote two songs which premiered as part of a short musical piece with the on campus Playwrights Performance Group that Spring. Upon seeing this performance, Avery Sedlacek, co-founder and Artistic Director of Liminality Theatre Company, approached Jack and Bailey about expanding the piece into a full-length musical. The show was workshopped as part of Shenandoah’s Student Performance Week and presented in the culminating Festival of Arts, Ideas, and Exploration in the Fall of 2018. In March of 2019, Lilac was presented as a public staged reading at the Winchester, Virginia Bright Box Theatre for two sold out performances.
Lilac is a new musical that follows the story of Matt, a young writer in New York, struggling to find answers in his career and relationships, especially with his workaholic boyfriend. This sometimes funny, sometimes heart-wrenching show explores friendship, heartbreak, bisexuality, and the power of writing at a time where every word matters.
